Thailand Accuses Cambodia of Ceasefire Violation Amid Renewed Border Clashes
BANGKOK, July 30 (TNA) – The Royal Thai Army (RTA) has strongly condemned Cambodia for what it describes as a “serious” and “irresponsible” second violation of a ceasefire agreement, which took effect at midnight on July 28, 2025.
The RTA reported that Cambodian forces launched renewed attacks in multiple border areas on July 29 and 30, undermining efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
This escalation comes as Thai forces reportedly captured 18 Cambodian soldiers following the recent clashes, and defensive wire fencing was erected around the contested Ta Muean Thom temple in Surin, a site of previous intense fighting.
Detailed Accounts of Cambodian Breaches
The RTA’s statement provided specific details of the alleged ceasefire violations. On July 29, at approximately 9:30 PM, Cambodian forces reportedly fired small arms at Thai positions in Chong Kanma, Sisaket Province, leading to a brief but intense exchange of fire.
Later that evening, beginning at 10:00 PM, Cambodian troops allegedly initiated continuous small arms fire, while emplying supporting weapons, including mortars in the Preah Vihear Area, Phu Makheua, and Huai Thamariya Vicinity in Sisaket Province. Thai forces were compelled to respond in self-defense, with intermittent firing from the Cambodian side persisting into the morning of July 30.
The RTA further reported that at 5:17 AM on July 30, clear evidence of mortar fire from Cambodia was detected entering Thai territory in Pha Mo E-Daeng, Sisaket Province.
The RTA emphasized that these actions constitute a “serious violation” of the ceasefire, reflecting Cambodia’s disregard for international obligations and affecting stability and trust between the two nations.
The Thai Army affirmed its commitment to upholding the highest principles of restraint, peace and humanity but warned of decisive action to protect Thailand’s sovereignty and its citizens should further violations occur.
Cambodian Soldiers Captured, Treated Humanely
In a significant development, Major General Winthai Suvaree, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, announced the capture of 18 Cambodian soldiers following clashes in the Sam Tae area of Sisaket province.
These engagements reportedly ensued after Cambodian forces used heavy and indirect fire against Thai territory, prompting a counter-response from Thai cavalry units. The captured Cambodian soldiers, who showed no signs of aggression, were disarmed and detained in strict adherence to international humanitarian principles.
Among the detainees are various ranks, including one second lieutenant and several non-commissioned officers. One of the captured soldiers sustained gunshot wounds and has since undergone surgery at a Thai hospital. Additionally, two deceased Cambodian soldiers were found in the area.
All captured Cambodian personnel are currently held in a secure location under the 2nd Army Area Command, receiving essential care, including clothing, food, water, and medical attention, in line with international military and humanitarian practices. The bodies of the deceased will be respectfully returned to Cambodia according to international protocols.
Border Fortifications and Memorials
As tensions remain high, images have emerged depicting Thai soldiers erecting barbed wire fencing around the Ta Muean Thom temple in Phanom Dong Rak district, Surin province. This area has been a persistent flashpoint, with reports of previous Cambodian provocations and an alleged attempt by Cambodia to seize the strategically vital temple.
Meanwhile, Thailand continues to mourn its soldiers lost in the recent border clashes. Royal-sponsored cremation ceremonies were held in their hometowns.
