Mor Plai: Thai ‘Ghost Whisperer’ haunted by lawsuit after border-clash prophecy

For years, celebrity fortune teller Navaracha Pinitlokakorn — better known as Mor Plai — has made headlines with what many praise as uncannily accurate predictions. Yet when it came to foreseeing trouble in her own life, her much touted “sixth sense” seems to have failed her spectacularly.

On August 5, two prominent lawyers took legal action against Mor Plai, accusing her of triggering unnecessary panic with a recent forecast.

Earlier this month, she allegedly predicted that Thai-Cambodian border clashes would flare up again, warning people living near the border not to return home.

Her warning came more than a week after skirmishes erupted on July 24, claiming lives on both sides, and concluded with a ceasefire agreement.

“This forecast caused needless panic and, taking into account its possible impacts, she should be held legally accountable,” said Ronnarong Kaewpetch, head of the Foundation Campaigning for Social Justice.

Alongside fellow high-profile lawyer Kerdphol Kaewkerd, Ronnarong said the case should serve as a “soft warning” against making public predictions that could harm people’s lives.

They accuse Mor Plai of spreading false information causing panic, a crime punishable by up to one month in jail and/or a maximum fine of 10,000 baht.

Ronnarong adds that Mor Plai could also face the more serious charge of threatening national security.

The celebrity soothsayer has reportedly been hospitalised with stress-related symptoms ever since the complaint was lodged.

Clairvoyant or just controversial?

Fans call her “Mor Plai Praikrasib”, or “ghost whisperer”, a nickname inspired by her claimed ability to communicate with multiple sacred entities — most notably the “God of Death”.

She repeatedly declares that her predictions aren’t mere guesswork but revelations passed on during “conversations” with these spirits.

She denies suffering from mental delusions, claiming her sanity was once confirmed by a Chinese interpreter — though she has never mentioned consulting a medical professional.

Mor Plai says she began seeing spirits in childhood and at first had trouble distinguishing between the living and the dead. By her early 20s, she had learned to “communicate” with them.

Predictions that hit – and missed

She quickly gained a reputation for accurately forecasting future events. In late 2024, she predicted a major earthquake would hit Thailand — and on March 28, 2025, a 7.7-magnitude quake in Myanmar sent tremors through Bangkok, shaking buildings and causing a deadly construction collapse.

She also forecast a crisis in Thailand’s sangha, a prophecy that came true this year when several senior monks became embroiled in financial and sexual misconduct scandals.

Following the Move Forward Party’s election victory in 2023, she correctly predicted that its leader Pita Limjaroenrat would not become prime minister.

Pita was subsequently suspended by the Constitutional Court for alleged shareholding violations, while the Senate blocked his prime ministerial bid because his party pushed to reform the lese majeste law.

However, not all her predictions have landed. Her claim that Thailand’s next PM would have a name starting with “P” fell flat when Srettha Thavisin of the Pheu Thai Party took office. And her latest prediction has led straight to unforeseen legal troubles.

Colourful past

Mor Plai holds a doctorate in Buddhism from Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University and once ordained as a Bhikkhuni (female monk) in Sri Lanka. During her time there, she courted controversy by selling “magical” soap to raise funds for temples, a move that many devout Buddhists slammed as a violation of religious precepts.

She disrobed in 2018 and returned to her fortune-telling career in Thailand. Her media-savvy persona, high-profile predictions and often provocative statements have long kept her in the public eye. The buzz around Mor Plai even includes cosmetic surgery, which she underwent in 2024.
