‘Sergeant Jod’ found safe, back on duty at Ta Muen Thom
Thailand’s social media platforms recently erupted with joy after news was published that “Sergeant Jod of Ta Muen Thom” is safe and has been seen in his usual spot at a Thai military base in Surin province.
Many had commented, pleading for him to stay safe and not disappear again, saying they couldn’t sleep while he was missing.
‘Sergeant Jod’ is a brown stray dog, who became an online sensation after pictures of him accompanying Thai soldiers at a military base near the temple, along the Thai-Cambodian border, went viral in recent weeks.
He was also famous for wearing a takrud, a traditional Thai talisman believed to offer protection in dangerous situations.
The ancient temple had recently become a focal point of tension between Thailand and Cambodia, which escalated into bloody clashes earlier this week.
‘Jod’ was rescued by border patrol soldiers after being injured. Since receiving care, he has never left the base and has become a loyal companion, guard dog and unofficial “base officer,” seen patrolling the perimeter, alongside soldiers, every day.
He is not regarded merely as a pet. He is treated as a member of the team, barking to alert troops of any unusual activity and standing guard at night, all without training or commands.
He is also friendly to tourists, wagging his tail and happily letting them pet him.
During the recent heavy border clashes, many people grew concerned for ‘Jod’s’ safety, after rumors surfaced that he had gone missing on July 28.
On July 30, however, Watchdog Thailand published a post, along with a video, showing that the dog is safe and has already returned to the base.
According to a statement, he was found hiding in nearby bushes with only minor scratches. He was still wearing his takrud and ran towards familiar soldiers as soon as he saw them.
Cheers erupted across the base when he returned safely. Following his safe return, curious Thai netizens have been asking about the takrud ‘Sergeant Jod’ wears—many hoping it brings the same protection.
