Gaur dies of gunshot wounds at farm near Kaeng Krachan National Park
A young gaur, a protected species, was found dead on Thursday at a farm in Kaeng Krachan district of Phetchaburi province by officials from the Kaeng Krachan National Park.
The park’s chief, Mongkol Chaipakdee, said that vets used a metal detector to examine the dead animal, which was about two years old, and found eight shotgun pellets embedded in its body.
The pellets had fractured several of the animal’s ribs and it is estimated that it died 6-8 hours before it was found.
An initial examination at the scene also found that the gaur was suffering from inflammation of pericardium (pericarditis), lung and heart muscle (myocarditis).
Mongkol said that a complaint will be lodged with the Kaeng Krachan district police, seeking to find the person who shot the gaur. It has now been buried.
