The agreement, signed during a special General Border Committee (GBC) meeting hosted by Malaysia, includes an immediate ceasefire that took effect on July 28.
The center’s spokesperson Rear Admiral Surasan Khongsiri stated that both sides agreed to hold their current positions without troop movements or reinforcements, and to refrain from any provocative actions. He emphasized that the agreement prohibits the use of force against civilians.
He also noted that while Cambodia has been observed maintaining troops and mobilizing equipment in some areas, the Thai military is closely monitoring the situation.
To ensure compliance, the agreement establishes a regional monitoring team led by Malaysia, which will include military attachés from ASEAN member states.
The agreement also allows for an immediate special GBC meeting if the situation flares up again. He highlighted the ceasefire as a major success, bringing safety and allowing displaced residents to return home. He expressed hope that Cambodia would adhere to the terms. -819 (TNA)
