New steps taken to ease traffic woes at Laem Chabang port
Concrete measures have now been put in place to solve the problem of traffic congestion at Thailand’s main Laem Chabang deep-sea port in Chon Buri province.
Sorawut Nuengchamnong, Secretary to Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit, stated that the measures were agreed upon at a joint meeting between representatives from the Ministry of Transport and the Land Transport Federation of Thailand (LTFT), held in Bangkok this week.
The agreed measures include:
The arrangement of two new parking lots — one covering a 70-rai area and the other 22 rai — along with mobile toilets to serve truck drivers waiting to pick up or deliver products at the port.
The relocation of containers, unloaded from designated ships, to specified zones outside the port compound. This is being done under temporary approval from the Customs Department.
The full implementation of a Truck Queue system through a newly introduced dashboard application for smartphones, along with the installation of CCTV cameras and real-time detection systems, to fairly and efficiently regulate inbound and outbound port traffic.
The development of a centralized database accessible to all relevant parties — including port and shipping line personnel, as well as truck operators and drivers — to streamline and improve the efficiency of goods clearance processes.
The implementation of medium- and long-term strategies, which include the planned introduction of an online queuing system integrated with smart port automation facilities, and the expansion of port-related infrastructure projects.
The delegates at the meeting, including Deputy Permanent Secretary for Transport Sorapong Paitoonphong, expressed their readiness to collaborate and move forward with these measures in a timely manner to enhance and sustain Thailand’s logistics system.
