Storm Kajiki intensifies into typhoon as it heads towards northern Vietnam
Tropical storm Kajiki is intensifying into a typhoon as it moves across the South China Sea towards northern Vietnam at 20kph, with peak wind speeds at its center of up to 140kph, according to the Meteorological Department.
The typhoon is expected to weaken back into a tropical storm as it makes landfall in the city of Vinh on Monday, further weakening into depression as it approaches Laos on Tuesday morning, and into a low pressure cell as it reaches Nan province of northern Thailand on Tuesday evening.
This weather system will bring heavy rain and strong winds to northeastern Thai provinces today and tomorrow and then to northern provinces until Wednesday.
Provinces in its path are Bung Kan, Nong Khai, Nakhon Phanom, Udon Thani, Nong Bua Lamphu, Loei, Uttaradit, Nan, Phayao, Phrae, Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Lampang, Lamphun and Mae Hong Son.
People in these provinces have been advised to brace for heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds. The accumulated rainfall may result in flash flooding and river overflows, particularly in low-lying areas and at the bases of mountains.
Strong winds and rough seas are anticipated in northern Andaman and Gulf of Thailand, with waves of three metres and higher in stormy areas. Small boats are advised to remain ashore.
