Hungary issues nationwide highest-level heat alert
So far this year, 8,106 outdoor fires have been reported, injuring 55 people and burning a total of 93 million square meters of land in Hungary.
BUDAPEST, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Hungarian health authorities have issued a Level 3 heat alert, the country's highest, for the entire territory from Thursday through Sunday, based on the latest forecast from the national meteorological service HungaroMet.
The alert, announced by the national chief medical officer, follows predictions that daily average temperatures will exceed 27 degrees Celsius in many areas, with peak temperatures likely to surpass 35 degrees.
Authorities warn that such extreme heat poses serious health risks for everyone, including those in good physical condition. The last time a Level 3 heat alert was issued was on June 24.
A nationwide fire ban has been in effect since Sunday. Lighting fires is prohibited in forests and within a 200-meter radius of them, even at designated fire pits. Authorities warn that the vegetation is so dry it can ignite from the smallest spark or heat source. While cooking over an open flame or grilling is permitted in private gardens, fires must never be left unattended.
So far this year, 8,106 outdoor fires have been reported, injuring 55 people and burning a total of 93 million square meters of land in Hungary.
Officials urge the public to stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, caffeine, and high-sugar drinks, and limit outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day. They also stress never to leave children, elderly people, patients, or pets in parked vehicles.
