How Styling Turns a Rented Hong Kong Apartment into Modern Spanish Retreat

Turning a rental into a true home doesn’t have to mean drastic changes. Sometimes, the right mix of colors, textures, and personal touches is all you need.

Who says renters can’t have it all? This 2,100-square-foot apartment in Queen’s Garden, Mid-Levels, proves otherwise. For a Spanish couple recently relocated from Madrid to Hong Kong, the goal was simple: make a rental feel like home. Enter Fion Lee, co-founder of The Editors Company, a Hong Kong-based interior design firm known for transforming spaces through thoughtful styling.

“Since this was their first time in Hong Kong, they wanted a space that felt warm, familiar, and personal,” says Lee. With high ceilings, an L-shaped layout, and stunning curved floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Hong Kong skyline, the apartment was ready for its transformation.

“The curved window became the focal point of the main living areas,” Lee explains. “It dictated furniture placement and allowed natural light to flood the space. The harbor view was always present, inspiring material and color choices that complemented the scenery outside.”

To honour the couple’s Spanish roots, subtle Mediterranean touches were added throughout—think rich wood tones, ceiling fans, and a warm, earthy vibe. But the overall design leaned Nordic: clean lines, neutral tones, and pops of colour that kept things fresh and fun.

In the living room, modular, comfortable seating was arranged to encourage socialising while soaking in the view. During the day, the room is bathed in natural light, while soft, ambient lighting takes over at night. The dining area flows seamlessly from the living room, featuring a sleek, expandable table positioned to catch the city lights after sunset.

“Invest in a few key pieces that last,” Lee advises. “A high-quality expandable dining table, for example, is not only practical but also elevates the space without overwhelming it.”

Pops of personality shine through in the details: vibrant artwork, stylish portable lamps, and statement decor add layers and character to the home. “We used designer lamps and statement pieces at varying heights to cultivate a rich, layered aesthetic,” Lee adds.

One significant challenge was the existing wood flooring, which the clients disliked but couldn’t replace in this rental. “We focused on drawing attention upward with artworks, pendant lights, and other decorative touches,” Lee explains. “It’s all about shifting the focus.”

The private spaces received the same thoughtful attention. The master bedroom prioritises calm and relaxation, with warm wood tones and a ceiling fan—a subtle nod to Madrid. The guest bedroom, designed with versatility in mind, provides a welcoming retreat for visitors, featuring adaptable furniture and colourful artwork that adds personality.

To maintain order and openness, storage was a key focus. The team incorporated diverse solutions, from discreet low cabinets to taller shelving, keeping the space tidy without sacrificing style. Instead of hiding everything away, Lee encouraged displays of meaningful items. “Carefully curate and display a few personal pieces,” she notes. “They add warmth and character to your decor.”

With sweeping harbour views, smart design, and a healthy dose of personality, this Nordic-meets-Mediterranean retreat demonstrates that even a rental can feel like a forever home—even for newcomers to Hong Kong.
