Perched on Hong Kong’s Pok Fu Lam shoreline, this home is a tranquil haven for a tight-knit family.

Its design by Craft of Both embodies both boldness and serenity, with 2,400 sq. ft. of sweeping and rippling spaces and surfaces. Inspired by the ocean tides, the home's aesthetic showcases a harmonious interplay of sea, sun and horizon motifs.

The rooms are enhanced by detailed architectural elements such as benches, cabinets, and partitions. The curvilinear forms and natural textures filter the radiant dusk sunlight that enters the home. The spaces and thresholds flow through and into one another, converging inwards to form a warm, undulating corridor-library.

Living Room

The home's connection to the sea and horizon is a key theme. The lounge, designed as an extended veranda, opens to the natural vistas, infusing the interior with natural light and soft colours as the sun sets. It boasts elegant architectural curves that resemble gentle waves, forming a layered, textured backdrop of rendered plaster, fabric and timber. These elements are accented with metal trims and deep red highlights, echoing the client's collection of antique oriental pieces.

A central column made of rich mahogany creates a strong focal point that the surrounding areas flow around. The wood surface runs through the centre of the plan, bringing warmth to each space it touches. Sliding doors open to reveal a circular bar. Its natural stone counter, thin metal shelf, and wall lighting evoke the silhouette of a sunset. At the entrance, a series of adjustable mirrored slats create a dynamic filter, reflecting light in all directions.

Dining Room

The dining area is subtly divided from the lounge by slender mirrored louvres. Soft, curvilinear lines on the ceiling and floor create a warm, understated backdrop for the client's antique furnishings, which take centre stage in the composition. Above, a cluster of large fabric pendants fills the air with brightness and volume, evoking a sense of a cloud in motion.

Throughout the home, each space thoughtfully integrates contemporary architectural elements with the client's richly detailed artisan and antique pieces. The goal is to celebrate these treasured items, using colour and detail as the guiding languages of this dialogue. Antique elements are carefully studied, and their key characteristics are translated into central design details, around which a comprehensive palette is developed. The result is a timeless, holistic composition that is deeply personal to the client.

Not Your Usual Corridor

The traditional corridor archetype is reimagined in this design, replaced by a vibrant, social "core". Filled with light and air, this space becomes a connective, energetic hub that opens up from all directions, branching out into each successive space like a river. A lyrical feature wall, adorned with custom fluting details that evoke the rippling surface of water, conceals bedrooms behind. The core space, served by an integrated library, sets the stage for warm, serendipitous moments of connection that occur in the nooks, doorways, and corners of a home, where families are at their most relaxed.

The guest washroom, concealed behind the white fluting of the core corridor, is a dramatic jewel waiting to be discovered. Saturated in deep green, the space is carefully carved to shape, with a natural green marble counter (twin to the red marble counter of the master ensuite) anchoring the centre of the room. Decorative lighting, wall hooks, handles, and a round mirror are all framed in brass trim, adorning a sculptural landscape of bespoke textured plaster that arcs seamlessly into the ceiling like a wave in motion.

Master Bedroom

As you enter the master bedroom, the space unfurls like a gentle wave, carrying the eye towards the tranquil retreat within. The fluted surface of the walls outside flows into the room, creating a sense of effortless continuity. A majestic cabinetry wall rises to meet the ceiling, its full-span expanse punctuated by a playful timber inlay detail that orchestrates a harmonious dance of grain and tone on each door. The king-size bed, enveloped by a sculptural oak headboard, becomes a serene focal point, flanked by two fabric pendant lights whose black trims inject a subtle yet bold accent.
