Glimpse into the Precious Hand Drawings of Design Masters

Home Journal

發布於 15小時前

Technology is making things faster, but faster doesn’t always mean better. Designers who truly understand their craft are still reaching for pen and paper — and for good reason.

“When we think about AI, we only think about the destination,” business author Simon Sinek famously said. “It has remarkable ability to paint the painting or solve the problem. But we forget the importance of doing the work ourselves.”

In a world dominated by digital tools—where photorealistic renderings are the norm—the art of hand-drawing is quietly fading. But for the seasoned professionals featured below, sketching by hand isn’t some wistful nod to the past; it’s the very heart of their creative process.

To celebrate this deeply personal craft, we asked some of these creative powerhouses to share the hand-drawn sketches, renderings, and drafts behind their most iconic projects. These works are stunning reminders of why hand-drawing still matters: raw, imperfect bursts of creativity that capture the soul and spontaneity no software can replicate.

André Fu, André Fu Studio

As a leading figure in luxury hotel design, André Fu’s work is celebrated worldwide for its fusion of local culture and modern aesthetics. His latest projects include the Dusit Thani Bangkok, the newly opened Capella Taipei, and the Waldorf Astoria Osaka.

When asked about AI’s influence on the design industry, Fu remarked: “I am fully aware of the influence of artificial intelligence, yet I have kept my approach to design authentic. I guess it will eventually integrate into design programmes to generate basic frameworks, which could then be refined.”

This philosophy is reflected in Fu’s dedication to hand-drawing. Above are hand renderings he created for the Dusit Thani Bangkok, Capella Taipei, and Waldorf Astoria Osaka—projects completed by André Fu Studio in 2024 and 2025. These works showcase his signature blend of understated elegance and timeless sophistication.

Joyce Wang, Joyce Wang Studio

Based in both London and Hong Kong, Joyce Wang redefines premium spaces through a human-centred design approach. Her portfolio includes internationally acclaimed hotels, private clubs, and restaurants. By drawing inspiration from local culture, behaviours, and environmental context, Wang imbues her spaces with narrative depth.

Below are hand renderings of the AMMO restaurant’s interior and a suite at The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Completed in 2012 and 2011 respectively, these projects highlight Wang’s ability to combine meticulous detail with bold storytelling.

Steve Leung, SLD

Renowned design maestro Steve Leung and his team have created hand-drawn works for numerous iconic collections, including the "Luxury of Serenity" furniture series (2017), the "SALUTE" lighting collection (2025), the "INKSTONE"vanity series (2012), and the "Greenery" armchair (2017). Each sketch captures a deep understanding of materials, proportions, and craftsmanship.

The SALUTE collection takes cues from nature, with its black metal framework resembling outstretched branches and layered “leaves” doubling as illuminated coasters. These elements can be combined into a sculptural table lamp or separated as standalone coasters for various drinks. When lit, the interplay of light and shadow evokes sunlight filtering through trees, adding a sophisticated ambience to social gatherings.

The INKSTONE bathroom series pays homage to traditional Chinese inkstones, echoing their colours, forms, and textures. It captures the spiritual essence of calligraphy while promoting mindfulness and tranquillity. Meanwhile, the Luxury of Serenity furniture series explores the concept of personal retreat and living enjoyment. Its streamlined designs and soft materials create a warm, serene atmosphere in living rooms, dining areas, and bedrooms.

Manfred Yuen, Groundwork Architects & Associates

Last year, Manfred Yuen, founder of Groundwork, infused the essence of Chinese landscape painting into Shenzhen’s urban living room, “The Veil”.This three-storey space connects a café, library, exhibition area, and office with gently flowing, veil-like walls, creating a seamless and poetic experience akin to a living landscape painting.

"I believe almost all designers engage in 'hand-drawing', the difference lies in the medium they use," says the architect.

"Some prefer digital tools, but personally, I still have a deep affection for traditional hand-drawing. I enjoy using high-quality paper and pens, complemented by watercolor rendering, to add depth and atmosphere to my illustrations. Of course, my artistic skills still have room for improvement, and I continue to work on refining them."

Ajax Law and Virginia Lung, One Plus Partnership

Ajax Law and Virginia Lung, co-founders of One Plus Partnership, specialise in creating bold, thematic designs for commercial spaces, including cinemas, restaurants, retail stores, clubs, sales centres, and offices. Every project starts with a clear theme, which is then woven into every detail of the design.

Below are sketches for the café at the Silver Screen Cinema in Haikou and the Broadway Cinematheque at L+ Mall in Shanghai. These works highlight the duo’s innovative approach to creating spaces that are as thought-provoking as they are functional.

In a world ruled by digital precision, hand-drawn designs feel refreshingly human. While technology makes things faster and sleeker, it often strips away the magic—the story, the process, the human touch. These hand-drawing documents where ideas truly come alive, and are important reminders that great design isn’t just about the outcome, but the craft behind it.
