This Wyoming Retreat is a Multigenerational Haven

A family home that balances legacy, landscape, and contemporary design.

“Our relationship with the homeowner is a huge part of this story,” says Eric Logan, Partner at CLB. “Because of the trust and rapport that we built over the years, we were able to challenge each other and ultimately arrive at a design we all feel proud of.”

This 6,081-square-foot home, perched on a 49-acre butte in Jackson, Wyoming, redefines multigenerational living by seamlessly blending timeless warmth with modern precision. Designed for a New York-based family, the property reflects their desire for a legacy home that harmonizes with the dramatic natural surroundings while accommodating their evolving needs.

The site’s steep contours and local height restrictions shaped a design that anchors into the hillside, creating a structure that responds to the terrain. Organized along a north-south axis, the home revolves around a double-height stair, which acts as a threshold between private and public spaces. The main level houses living, dining, and kitchen areas with sweeping views of the Teton Range, while bedrooms and entertainment spaces occupy the lower level.

“This project is a story of evolution and contrast,” notes Bryan James, Principal at CLB. The architecture balances opposing forces: a quiet, sheltered entry courtyard hugs the mountainside, while the downhill façade opens dramatically to panoramic views of the valley below.

Natural materials anchor the home in its setting. Montana-sourced stone clads both the exterior and interior, while cedar ceilings, walnut floors, and blackened steel accents contrast rustic textures with clean, modern lines. Inside, the design team opted for earthy tones—sage green, ochre, and burnt orange—to ground the aesthetic within the mountain landscape, steering clear of high-contrast palettes to let the views take center stage.

“We combined natural materials like leather, wood, and stone with custom furniture that relates to details throughout the interior architecture,” says Sarah Kennedy, Interior Designer at CLB. “Rich cedar and walnut connect with a traditional aesthetic, but we played off these textures with refined, modern details.”

Thoughtful craftsmanship defines the home’s character. From a custom dining table inspired by the Snake River’s curves to rugs mimicking the topography of Jackson Hole, every detail tells a story. Sustainability also played a key role, with features like a high-performing building envelope and geothermal heating ensuring the home’s longevity.

“My favorite thing about this project is that you get to occupy the space between contrasts and enjoy them both,” adds Logan. “The house sits between the quiet, contemplative courtyard and expansive views to the valley below.”
