Two-year-old rushed to Chiang Mai hospital from eating cannabis jellies
Parents are being advised of the dangers to children of jelly candies containing THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis. A two and a half year old girl was rushed to hospital in Chiang Mai province after she had consumed about ten such sweets.
This unfortunate incident was revealed by the girl’s father, who claimed that the sweets had been accidentally left in their house by a guest attending a birthday party for their uncle on July 1st.
The unnamed parent recalled that he was notified by a teacher to pick up his daughter from school immediately and take her to hospital, after she became sleepy and refused to eat lunch. He said he took his unconscious daughter to a hospital for emergency treatment, but the doctor there could not diagnose her problem.
He said that he asked the guests who had been at the birthday party whether any of them had given the girl any “edibles”. One guest admitted that he brought some cannabis edibles, in the form of jelly candies, to the party and had accidentally left them in the house.
The man then immediately told the doctor that his daughter might have eaten some cannabis edibles, so the doctor could administer the right medication.
The girl recovered and was discharged from hospital on Friday. Later that day she was, however, rushed back to the same hospital after she developed a high fever and hallucinations.
The man subsequently filed a complaint with Hang Dong district police against the guest who left the cannabis edibles in his house. He also called on authorities to impose tighter restrictions on cannabis edibles, which are readily available.
