Thai Deputy PM Hails US 19% Import Tariff as Sign of Strong Alliance
BANGKOK, Aug 1 (TNA) – Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira today stated that the recently announced 19% import tariff from the United States reflects the strong and enduring alliance between Thailand and the US.
The new rate is a significant reduction from a previously proposed rate of 36%.
He thanked “Team Thailand” for their dedication and strenuous efforts in securing this outcome.
The President of the United States has announced reciprocal tariffs of 19% on imports from Thailand, Cambodia, and Malaysia, effective today, August 1, 2025.
Pichai emphasized that the new tariff rate will help Thailand maintain its competitiveness on the global stage, build investor confidence, and open doors to economic expansion, increased income, and new opportunities for the country.
He acknowledged that the work isn’t over and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting affected entrepreneurs and farmers with comprehensive measures.
These support measures include budget allocations, soft loans, subsidies, tax measures, and necessary regulatory reforms. The aim is to enable Thailand to adapt and confidently move towards the future global economy.
Pichai added that the negotiation outcome signals the urgent need for Thailand to accelerate its adjustments, building a stable and robust economy ready to tackle future global challenges. -819 (TNA)
