Pol. Maj.Gen. Siriwat Deepor submitted the report, stemming from a complaint by Prime Minister’s deputy secretary-general for political affairs Somkid Chueakhong, targeting a Facebook page “Samdech Hun Sen of Cambodia.” The page allegedly published the controversial audio clip.
Mr. Somkid earlier explained his decision to file the complaint as the recording had fostered discord among Thais and posed a threat to national security. There are growing calls for the prime minister to resign over controversial remarks she made on the phone.
Initial findings suggest the page is run by multiple administrators in Cambodia. The Cyber Police recommend the Prosecutor General act as investigating officer, pursuing charges against the page administrators. They declined to comment on Hun Sen’s direct involvement.
Mr. Sakasem Nisaiyok, Spokesperson for the Prosecutor General’s Office, stated that if the case involves offenses committed abroad, prosecutors will gather further evidence. If sufficient wrongdoing is found, the case returns to the Prosecutor General for indictment consideration. An approved indictment would lead to a warrant from the Criminal Court and coordination with Interpol for a Red Notice.
He reiterated the need for careful consideration due to the case’s impact on international relations, noting Thailand has no precedent for prosecuting a foreign leader.
The decision to request information from Prime Minister Paetongtarn depends on the evidence-gathering process, he added.
