Thai DPM Pichai Flies to US for Urgent Tariff Talks

BANGKOK, June 30 (TNA) – Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira is set to depart for the United States tonight (June 30) for urgent negotiations on reciprocal tariffs and non-tariff measures, aiming to secure national benefits.

Pichai, leading the Thai negotiation team, announced he would hold formal discussions on July 3 with US counterparts regarding customs duties. He emphasized that the government prioritizes national interests in these talks, which follow several online discussions and consultations with the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR).

“This discussion aims to delve into further details, hoping to achieve a balanced proposal that considers US restrictions alongside Thai demands, aiming for a win-win outcome for both countries,” Pichai stated.

He added that the agenda would also cover non-tariff measures, such as rules, regulations, or trade inconveniences that act as barriers. Successful negotiations and adjustments in these areas would streamline import-export processes.

Pichai noted that based on other countries’ experiences with the USTR, a favorable proposal could lead to a relaxation of measures, potentially extending the US tariff adjustment period. While some academics have estimated a potential 18% US tariff on Thai goods based on GDP calculations, Pichai stressed that the exact US import tariff rate remains unknown.
