Hun Sen claims Thaksin gave him secret Thai government papers
Cambodia’s strongman Hun Sen has attacked Thaksin Shinawatra again, his former long-time ally, accusing him of sharing confidential Thai government documents concerning the granting of aid to Cambodia.
Hun Sen said he considers Thaksin’s actions to be treason.
Now serving as president of the Cambodian Senate, Hun Sen made the statement while chairing an extraordinary Senate session on July 14.
However, his claim caused confusion, as he alleged that Thaksin gave him the sensitive documents in 2010 while serving as prime minister, even though Thaksin had already been ousted from office and was living in exile at the time.
In fact, Abhisit Vejjajiva was Thailand’s prime minister in 2010, while Thaksin had entered self-imposed exile following the 2006 military coup that ousted him from power.
Hun Sen claims that the document Thaksin gave him related to Thailand’s 1.4 billion baht of assistance for the repair of Road 68, which runs from the Chong Chom border checkpoint to Oddar Meanchey province in Cambodia, covering a distance of over 113km.
Reports indicate that the two countries signed an assistance agreement in 2009, but Hun Sen, then serving as prime minister, subsequently cancelled the aid package.
“Last night I watched TikTok. In 2010, I announced that I would not take Thai money to rebuild Road 68,” Hun Sen said.
He added that his decision to reject the Thai assistance stemmed from the documents he had been shown by Thaksin.
