Thai FM Protests Cambodia to UN Over Border Violations
BANGKOK, July 25 (TNA) – Thailand’s Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa announced that Thailand has officially protested to the United Nations and parties to the Ottawa Treaty.
He accused Cambodia of violating its territorial integrity and misrepresenting facts to third-party nations.
Speaking via video conference from the UN Headquarters in New York, Maris confirmed he addressed the UN Security Council, reiterating Thailand’s commitment to peaceful, sincere bilateral negotiations for conflict resolution. He emphasized Thailand’s adherence to international law and the UN Charter in self-defense.
Thailand submitted formal protests detailing Cambodian violations, including the use of landmines in Thai border areas, which caused civilian casualties. Maris condemned this as an unacceptable violation of the Ottawa Treaty.
Maris asserted that Thailand has consistently sought sincere negotiations, contrasting this with Cambodia’s alleged distortion of facts to third countries, claiming Thailand refused talks.
He also discussed plans to systematically evacuate Thais from Cambodia, confirming increased flights between Phnom Penh and Bangkok. Maris urged the approximately 500 Thais in Cambodia to monitor updates from the embassy and consulate, assuring assistance for all to return within one to two days. -819 (TNA)
