Thai-Cambodian Border Situation Eases After Standoff

SA KAEO, Aug 26 (TNA) – Security forces have regained control of the situation at the Thai-Cambodian border near Ban Nong Chan village in Sa Kaeo province after a tense standoff where Cambodian villagers reportedly dismantled a barbed-wire fence.

The recent confrontation follows a long-standing territorial dispute. According to Thai authorities, the area, located in the Khok Sung district, is Thai territory that was used to shelter Cambodian refugees during their war. Over the years, Thai officials claim that some Cambodians remained and expanded their settlements, encroaching on Thai land.

The incident that triggered the latest standoff occurred yesterday when Thai military and security forces began installing a barbed-wire fence. Thai authorities clarified that the barbed wire put up yesterday was separate from any existing border fences. The temporary fence was intended to secure a survey team from Sa Kaeo province who were inspecting the land with local residents.

The Cambodian villagers, however, appeared to misunderstand the purpose of the fence and reacted with hostility. Cambodian villagers reportedly dismantled parts of the fence, leading to a tense confrontation. One Thai soldier was reportedly injured during the incident. After the survey was complete, the Thai military removed the temporary fence to restore the area to its previous state.

Military and security personnel are closely monitoring the area to maintain order and uphold Thailand’s sovereignty. Officials are urging the public to avoid the high-risk zone to prevent any disruption to operations.

While Cambodian villagers were seen camping near the fence overnight, no further conflict has been reported.

The school in the village, Ban Nong Chan School, has temporarily suspended classes for two days, August 26-27, out of concern for the safety of students and staff. -819 (TNA)
