First Army Region command denies links to illegal businesses in Poipet
The First Army Region explained today why its forces did not attack the Cambodian border town of Poipet last month, which is opposite Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province and is widely known to be a hub of casinos and scam call centres.
The clarification is intended to dispel criticism among nationalist groups that the military may have vested interests in those activities.
The First Army Region said it is responsible for Sa Kaeo province, which is heavily populated and close to the border, unlike the northeastern provinces, under the Second Army Region, which are mostly forested and sparsely inhabited.
“Our ultimate objective is to protect our territorial sovereignty and national interests, particularly the lives and property of the Thai people,” according to the statement.
The First Army Region went on to say that its main targets of attack were Cambodian military structures encroaching on Thai soil and that the action was in accordance with the Rules of Engagement and in compliance with international humanitarian law, to avoid affecting the lives and property of the civilian population.
Similar action was, however, also taken against Cambodian civilians who encroached onto Thai territory.
The First Army Region says that its operational plans are not confined to military responses.
They also place great importance on achieving a comprehensive solution, which has been presented to international organisations and can be used to counter Cambodia’s disinformation campaign.
