The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) has reassured the public that the rare appearance of thousands of pink sea cucumbers on a local beach poses no threat to the marine ecosystem, attributing the phenomenon to recent strong winds and rough seas.

The incident occurred at Suan Son Beach in Phe sub-district of Muang district, Rayong province, where a stretch of coastline spanning several hundred metres turned a vibrant reddish-pink as the sea cucumbers were washed ashore. The unusual sight quickly drew the attention of tourists holidaying in the area.

Today, Pinsak Suraswadi, director general of the DMCR, instructed the 1st Marine and Coastal Resources Office to inspect the site as a matter of urgency.

A team, led by Thanet Mannoi, director of the Marine and Coastal Resources Office Region 1, and including relevant officials, conducted an assessment.

They identified the creatures as a specific type of sea cucumber, scientifically known as Cercodemas anceps, commonly referred to as pink sea cucumbers or pink prickly sea cucumbers. These soft-bodied, cylindrical invertebrates resemble cucumbers or sausages, featuring small spikes on their skin with colouration ranging from bright pink to reddish-orange.

According to marine experts, sea cucumbers play a vital role by digesting organic matter and the remains of organisms on the seabed. Often dubbed the "housekeepers of the sea", they are crucial in maintaining the balance and health of the underwater ecosystem.

The department’s research centre confirmed that the stranded sea cucumbers were still alive.

Officials explained that a large quantity beaching like this is a rare but natural phenomenon, caused by strong waves pushing the creatures ashore, adding that they will be carried back into the ocean naturally on the high tide.

Beachgoers and residents have been advised to refrain from getting too close to or touching the sea cucumbers. Authorities warn that certain species may release defensive toxins, which can cause skin irritation, particularly in individuals with sensitivities.

Members of the public who encounter similar marine incidents are urged to report them via the forest and marine protection hotline on 1362, or to notify local authorities immediately.

Rayong is an eastern Thai province on the Gulf of Thailand, known for its national parks and beaches.
