"By aligning our complementary strengths, we can form partnerships that would benefit both sides, be it through joint research, pilot projects or knowledge exchange," said Hot.

LJUBLJANA, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Slovenia plans to further enhance "friendly and constructive bilateral relations" with China based on mutual respect, the country's deputy parliamentary speaker has said.

Last month, Meira Hot, vice-president of the National Assembly of Slovenia, attended the 4th China-Central and Eastern European Countries Expo & International Consumer Goods Fair in China's eastern port city of Ningbo.

Participation in such events "opens new venues for dialogue and concrete cooperation," Hot, who is also a vice-president of the Social Democrats party, told Xinhua in a recent interview.

While economic ties and cultural exchanges between the two countries are extremely important, political trust is also essential, she said, adding "Without mutual understanding on the political level, it would be really hard to build sustainable economic or cultural ties."

Hot said the Slovenian government recognizes China as its most important economic partner in Asia and firmly adheres to the one-China principle.

"We are looking to expand exports to China," said Hot, adding that exports to China could rise to 1 billion euros (1.16 billion U.S. dollars) within five to 10 years by deepening bilateral ties.

She said sectors where exports to China could be expanded include smart innovation, green technology, the automotive industry, pharmaceuticals, sustainable development, smart logistics, digital connectivity and tourism.

"By aligning our complementary strengths, we can form partnerships that would benefit both sides, be it through joint research, pilot projects or knowledge exchange," said Hot.

She said Slovenia could be an ideal entry point for China into Europe because of its geostrategic location at the crossroads between central and southeastern Europe, its high-quality infrastructure and well-educated workforce.

"Slovenia is one of the safest countries, we have political stability, strong innovation and access to broader European markets," she said.

Noting that "people-to-people exchange is essential to build a long-term understanding and friendship between countries," Hot said Slovenia is eager to promote student exchange and joint research programs with China to give young people an opportunity to learn about each other's country and language, deepen mutual understanding and overcome barriers.

Recalling her first visit to China last month, Hot said, "You need to visit China to experience it" because one cannot know the real China through traditional media or social networks.

Hot said she was "most impressed" by China's history, culture and nature, as well as the warmth and hospitality of its people. Marveling at the coexistence of the old and the new, she said, "The rich history is preserved, yet it has not hindered technological development."

Hot expressed her hope that the friendship between Slovenia and China will continue to grow and the two countries will build bridges of trust, understanding and collaboration across various sectors, including economy, political cooperation, cultural and student exchanges, and tourism.

"Together we can shape a more connected, sustainable and peaceful future," she said.■
