Voting by MPs for new Thai PM expected this week
The vote by the House of Representative for Thailand’s next prime minister is expected over September 4thand 5th, after Paetongtarn Shinawatra was removed from office by the Constitutional Court last Friday.
House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha revealed today that he has assigned the secretary-general of the House of Representatives to coordinate the acceptance of prime ministerial nominations from political parties.
As the main opposition, the People party have said that they will make a decision on who to nominate this afternoon.
Wan Noor explained that MPs must be informed at least one day in advance of a parliamentary vote. Therefore, September 4th and 5th are the most likely dates.
The House Speaker added that he wants the vote on the country’s next leader as soon as possible, because he doesn’t want to see Thailand without a prime minister for too long, which would affect stability.
Meanwhile, the secretary-general of the House of Representatives, Arpath Sakanan, revealed that none of the political parties have coordinated with them yet to add the voting session on a new prime minister to parliament’s agenda. The House Speaker has, however, ordered the House to be prepared for the vote between September 3rd and 10th.
