Trump sets 19% tariff on Thailand, Cambodia after ceasefire deal
The United States has imposed a 19% tariff on imports from Thailand and Cambodia — down from the originally proposed 36% — following a ceasefire agreement between the two countries, reached under pressure from President Donald Trump.
Earlier this month, Trump had warned that trade deals would be linked to the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, and said tariffs would remain high unless both sides agreed to end the fighting and enter negotiations.
Malaysia, which helped broker the ceasefire, has also been assigned a 19% tariff — the same rate previously announced for other Southeast Asian neighbours, including Indonesia and the Philippines.
Other ASEAN countries face varying tariff rates: Laos and Myanmar at 40%, Vietnam at 20%, Brunei at 25%, and Singapore at 10%
Meanwhile Thai government spokesman Jirayu Huangsab said in a statement, "It represents a win-win approach aimed at preserving Thailand's export base and long-term economic stability".
