Ceasefire won’t stop Thai response to Cambodian incursions – Defense Minister
Despite the ceasefire, if Cambodian troops fire into or enter Thai territory, Thai troops are authorised to retaliate, said acting Defence Minister Gen Nattaphon Nakpanich today.
“If shots are fired onto our land, immediate retaliation is authorised. If Cambodian troops intrude, Thai soldiers must respond with fire, in line with their duties and the rules of engagement,” he said.
We are told to respect the ceasefire, but it does not mean we will not shoot at all, he added.
Thai forces are now on full alert, as Nattaphon stated that he has received reports of increased Cambodian troop deployment in the Preah Vihear area. He emphasised that Thailand will not allow any foreign military operations to take place on its sovereign territory.
Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry has prepared evacuation centres, to accommodate local residents if necessary.
When asked whether Cambodia might respond diplomatically or militarily, Gen. Nattaphon said the outcome cannot not be predicted, but Thailand is fully prepared for all scenarios.
