Hong Kong’s nightlife rarely ends in moderation, and when the morning after arrives with a vengeance, the hunt for a remedy begins. Perhaps it was one too many rooftop Negronis or poor decisions at 3am. Either way, salvation lies not in regret, but in something hot, salty or strong enough to jolt you back to life
From silky congee that hugs your insides to smoothies packed with the nutritional equivalent of a life coach, these spots can get you back on your feet, fast.. Welcome to the Tatler-approved guide to eating your way out of a hangover.

Joongang Haejang
Some hangovers call for remorse. Others demand haejang-guk, a full-bodied soup of leftover offal and beef bones, designed to warm the stomach, stir the appetite and coax the booze out of your system. At Joongang Haejang, the Wan Chai sibling of a Seoul original, it arrives piping hot, gloriously pungent and murky with history, ready to slap the sin out of you. This doesn’t just revive you; it reboots you. And while that soup is usually my chosen act of contrition, I often get sidetracked by the gopchang jeongol, a blistering hotpot of beef intestines, mushrooms and tofu in a broth that tastes like it’s been through things. It’s rich, spicy, comforting and deeply savoury—exactly what you need when your nerves are frayed and your dignity’s in pieces.

Yun Wellness at Island Shangri-La
If my bank account allows it, a day at Yun Wellness at Island Shangri-La. Nothing—and I mean nothing—will cure a hangover like jumping into a body of water, and the pool at Island Shang is always a treat. You can order food poolside, too. A classic cheeseburger, or their XO fried rice, will heal your soul. Then, sweat it all out in the sauna. They have both infrared and traditional. If you’re really going through it, book the invigorating detox massage, it’s one of my favourite treatments in Hong Kong.

Paradise Dynasty
When I moved to Hong Kong in 2019, the idea of having soup noodles and dumplings as hangover food felt as foreign as, well, me at the time. Fast forward six years, and I’m a total convert. A family favourite for these crucial recovery missions is Paradise Dynasty in Lee Theatre Plaza. It’s unpretentious, it’s delicious, and it’s got all my favourite dim sum in one place. Before their revamp, the restaurant had this wonderfully dim lighting—a godsend when you’re nursing both a hangover and a fragile sense of dignity. Because honestly, nothing heals the soul (and the stomach) like dumplings in the dark.

South Lane
While a juicy, greasy burger might be tempting at first, it never fully sits well with me, especially when hungover. What does? South Lane’s Wakame bowl. I’ve been hooked since the very first bite, and I’ve ordered nothing else. This plant-based masterpiece is both hearty and comforting, featuring chia tofu, Impossible meatballs, wakame rice, ginger sprouts and roasted zucchini. The generous portion feels like a warm hug from the inside out. Pair it with their detox smoothie, and if you’re at the Shek Tong Tsui location, snag an outdoor seat to enjoy the scent of incense from the nearby temple—pure bliss.

Amalfitana Artisan Pizza Bar
Hangovers, meet your match: pizza by the beach. Waking up from a night of questionable decisions, I sometimes find myself to be the personification of a walking disaster zone: head pounding, stomach staging a full-blown mutiny and my dignity somewhere lost under the couch cushions. So instead of being a couch potato, I prefer to eat one. Enter Amalfitana Artisan Pizza Bar at Repulse Bay, where the pizza and truffle fries usually swoop in like a cheesy superhero. The bread soaks in the alcohol as I soak in the sun with sand in my toes, while making the familiar, doomed promise: “Never again”. I also love the garlic bread at Amalfitana, it’s like a peace treaty for my rebellious insides.

One Dim Sum
There’s nothing like a nourishing bowl of piping hot Chinese-style soup and dim sum to cure a hangover. Luckily, One Dim Sum has all this and more. Think congee, steamed rice rolls and classic Cantonese steamed rice dishes. Another plus? The no-frills establishment, with locations in Central and Prince Edward, has extended opening hours from Friday to Sunday. No matter if you’re feeling the post-night out munchies or in need of a cure early in the morning, One Dim Sum has you covered. When it comes to the dim sum on offer, favourites include the ham sui gok, or fried glutinous rice dumplings, and siu mai that doesn’t skimp on the shrimp content.

Australia Dairy Company
When I’m hungover, I want something warm and simple: ham with macaroni in soup always works. Add an iced lemon tea to kick your brain back on. It’s cheap, comforting and just what a dehydrated mess needs. Just don’t eat too slowly, there’s a queue outside and the staff will remind you.
