Clouded Leopard at Khao Kheow Zoo goes viral
A clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi province has become an overnight internet sensation, with netizens playfully comparing its distinct coat patterns to those of a reticulated python.
The feline, named ‘Nong Nueng’ (Brother One), was born and raised at the zoo in Si Racha district.
Photos of the leopard recently went viral, sparking widespread amusement across social media platforms due to its unique markings.
Narongwit Chodchoy, director of Khao Kheow Open Zoo, stated yesterday that Nong Nueng is a product of the zoo’s successful wildlife breeding programme. Born to father ‘Ping’ and mother ‘Talay’, the leopard represents a major milestone for the zoo’s conservation efforts.
Nong Nueng has two siblings, named ‘Song’ (Two) and ‘Sam’ (Three). All three have been raised under the close supervision of zoo staff, who monitor their health, nutrition and development. According to the director, they are currently in excellent health.
Responding to the online banter comparing the leopard's coat to a python, Narongwit viewed the comments positively, seeing them as a sign of public affection and interest. He explained that the large, cloud-like blotches are natural characteristics unique to the species, from which they got their name.
The director added that, while the python comparisons provide light-hearted colour, the zoo hopes the public will also recognise the animal's conservation value. Clouded leopards are a protected species, and Nong Nueng serves as an important ambassador for wildlife awareness.
The breeding and research facility where Nong Nueng resides is currently closed to the public to ensure the animals' well-being.
Wildlife enthusiasts can still observe the clouded leopards via a live stream on the zoo's official platform at https://www.zoodio.live/th.
